China After Mao
SYNOPSIS: Just after Mao’s death, the expression ‘political tourism’ was often used to indicate that tourists were not allowed to walk the street alone. During every tour, visitors found themselves surrrounded by a cordon of guides and translators, and they all got to see the same standard communes, the same standard factories, etc. However, filmmaker Renée Scheltema managed to escape from these guided tours, filming daily life in China.
